Diagnosis
What's the problem?
Obtaining a diagnosis is sometimes simple and quick, as with the snake shown here with 5 ticks in and around its eye, but that is unlikely to be the case if you have been referred to Animal Medical Centre Referral Services!.
In addition to obtaining a history of what has been happening with the patient, physical and other examinations will then be required. The initial stages of investigation are often done at the time of consultation, but most cases will require more involved and prolonged investigations with the patient admitted to the clinic for several hours to several days depending what is necessary.
This dog has an obvious cataract and a less noticeable iris coloboma (hole). What cannot be determined visually is whether the retina is intact and functional so various tests were required including ERG (see our webpage on electrophysiology for more information).

Pharyngeal and laryngeal examination prior to endotracheal intubation
Any or all of the following might be necessary on one or more occasion to reach a diagnosis.
